Dennis Bovell,nascido em 1953, em Saint Peter , Barbados , West Indies, é um baixista,guitarrista,baterista,tecladista,percussionista,vocalista,engenheiro de som e mixagem,arranjador e produtor musical do reggae. Bovell era um membro original da banda britânica do reggae Matumbi , e lançou registros de reggae e dub sob seu próprio nome, bem como com o seu pseudônimo Blackbeard.
Bovell se mudou com sua família a sul de Londres com a idade de 12 anos Ele tornou-se imerso na cultura jamaicana, especialmente a música dub , e montou o seu próprio sistema de som Jah Sufferer.
Executando o sistema de som trouxe problemas com a polícia, e Bovell foi preso por seis meses em prisão preventiva, mas foi liberado mais tarde com um recurso. Bovell teve amigos na escola como os futuros músicos do rock, incluindo o tecladista Nick Straker e produtor musical Tony Mansfield , ambos os quais trabalharam mais tarde com Bovell. Bovell também trabalhou como engenheiro de som na Dip Records, o precursor do rótulo Lovers Rock, e ele foi uma figura chave nos primeiros dias do gênero lovers rock . Bovell também é conhecido por tentar fundir a discoteca com os ritmos do reggae, principalmente com a canção hit "Silly Games", de Janet Kay .Bovell já produziu álbuns por uma grande variedade de artistas incluindo I-Roy , The Thompson Twins , Sharon Shannon , Alpha Blondy , Bananarama , The Pop Group , Fela Kuti ,The Slits , Orange Juice e Madness.

Bovell também co-escreveu e co-produziu a maior parte do material do cantor de reggae britânico Bobby Kray . Em 1980, Bovell escreveu a partitura para o filme de Franco Rosso Babylon The Film . Bovell também escreveu música para o drama de televisão de 1983 The Boy Who Won the Pools e Global Revolution em 2006..
