The Flames formado em 1964 por Alton Ellis. Depois que seu parceiro de canto John Holt saiu (e mais tarde se juntou ao The Paragons), Ellis formou um trio para apoiá-lo chamado The Flames. Composto originalmente por seu irmão Leslie Ellis, David "Baby G" Gordon e um cara chamado Ronnie, mais tarde pessoas como Lloyd Charmers e Winston Jarrett se juntariam. A adesão flutuaria. Ellis rapidamente obteve um grande sucesso com o apelo antiviolência "Dance Crasher" e, no ano seguinte, lançou o que foi indiscutivelmente o primeiro single rocksteady, "Get Ready Rock Steady".Depois que Alton Ellis seguiu carreira solo, Winston Jarrett assumiu as funções de vocal principal. Ellis mudou-se para a Inglaterra em 1973...
