Lowell "Sly" Fillmore Dunbar nasceu em 10 de Maio de 1952,em Kingston, Jamaica,e é considerado no cenário reggae como um dos melhores bateristas do reggae,senão o melhor. Dunbar, cuja a alcunha foi dada segundo as informações recebidas para sua paixão por Sly & the Family Stone, lançou sua carreira musical quando ainda em sua adolescência, tocando com um grupo local, The Yardbrooms, na idade de quinze anos. Seu princípio da gravação realizava-se em 1969, quando apareceu em um álbum, Double Barrel, por Dave e por Ansell Collins. Dunbar continuou subseqüentemente a tocar com Ansell Collins em uma banda,Skin, Flesh and Bones . A reunião com Robbie Shakespeare aconteceu em 1972, então tocando o baixo para os Hippy Boys, Dunbar começou uma amizade por toda a vida.
