 Em Kingston, Hibbert conheceu Henry "Raleigh" Gordon e Nathaniel "Jerry" Mathias, formando em 1961 , um grupo cujo início de gravações foram incorrectamente atribuídos a 'The Flames' e 'The Vikings' no Reino Unido pela Island Records  .
Com seus backing vocalistas  Nathaniel "Jerry" Matthias e Ralphus "Raleigh" Gordon, o Toots Hibbert manteve-se uma voz original e distintiva em música jamaicana desde a era  do ska, quando o single "54-46 (That´s My Number)" foi um hit influente.
